Here’s the challenge: how do you create a round sphere from square bricks? Curved surfaces are always a tough nut to crack in MOC building. Don’t worry – today I’ll share a super practical technique: using the high symmetry of a sphere, you only need 6 identical modules to assemble a perfect football!
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced builder, this method will get you up to speed quickly. I designed a large-sized football model in Studio (diameter approx. 10‑13 cm) and have prepared a detailed parts list (see at the end). Let me walk you through the secret of this “hexahedral football” step by step.
🧠 Core Principle: The Hexahedral Symmetrical Assembly Method
A sphere can be approximated by 6 identical curved panels (like the 6 faces of a cube, but each face is bulging outward). So our strategy is simple:
Design one basic unit – a single “curved tile” that contains part of the sphere’s surface.
Duplicate it 5 times – you get 6 identical units.
Assemble them – connect the 6 units along their curvature, and instantly you have a complete sphere!

The advantages of this modular approach are clear:
✅ High part efficiency – no waste.
✅ Low error rate – you only have to master one module.
✅ Infinite scalability – change the size of the module to adjust the final diameter.
🔧 Module Breakdown: One “Tile” of the Large Football
Each of the 6 modules is a small curved wall built from the following parts. Let’s look at one module:
Bottom layer (large plates shape the curved outline):
3034 (Plate 2x8) ×1
3795 (Plate 2x6) ×2

Upper layer (small plates fill the surface and create the curvature):
3032 (Plate 4x6) ×1
3710 (Plate 1x4) ×4
3022 (Plate 2x2) ×1
3023 (Plate 1x2) ×2
3031 (Plate 4x4) ×1

Key connector:
30414 (Brick 1x4 with Studs on Side) ×2 – these side‑stud bricks are placed at the edges of the module to securely lock with the adjacent modules.

After building all 6 modules, you have 6 identical curved tiles. Their inner and outer arcs are precisely designed so they fit together seamlessly.
🔗 Assembly Process: As Easy as Putting Orange Slices Together
Build all 6 modules individually.
Take 3 modules and connect them edge‑to‑edge using the side‑stud bricks (30414) to form a hemisphere.
Assemble the other 3 modules into the second hemisphere.
Join the two hemispheres. For extra stability (especially in large models), reinforce the inside with additional 30414 or long axles (e.g., Technic beams).
🎨 Personalize Your Football
Do you love the classic black‑and‑white look? Or maybe you want to recreate the official World Cup ball of this year? Or a pink, princess‑style football? No problem at all!
The beauty of this 6‑module structure is color freedom. You can replace “Light Bluish Gray” in the parts list with any color you like – black, white, red, blue, or even a mix. Just upload the parts list to the MyGoBricks toolkit page, and you can swap colors with one click. All parts are in stock and ready for your customization!
⚽ You can also use this technique to build different sizes:
just scale the modules down to get a medium or small football.
